Universitas Sumatera Utara is the oldest university outside of Java and is situated only 6km from the hustle and bustle of Medan. It lies on the outskirts, along the road that connects Medan and Berastagi, in a sprawling campus of 120 hectares.

It opened its doors in November 1957 under the auspices of the President of Indonesia, with only three faculties.

By 1964, the number of faculties had grown considerably, and the university had the privilege of witnessing the development of two of its faculties into the Teaching & Education Institute and the Medan State Polytechnic.

Today, the university has a total of ten faculties with an enrolment of 23,000 students. Among these faculties are the Faculties of Medicine, Law, Agriculture, Economics, Dentistry, Literature, Community Health, Social Sciences and Politics. The university is planning additional Faculties of Forestry and Psychology.

Campus Facilities

Set on a sprawling landscape of 120 hectares, Universitas Sumatera Utara has a wide range of campus facilities. These include lecture halls, laboratories, an administrative centre, a library, a computer centre, an AV & electronic room, a workshop, male & female dorms, an auditorium, a post office counter, banks, a polyclinic, the USU press, a guest house, a student council & advisory and a multitude of sports facilities.

The centralised university library has hi-tech computer equipment with internet facilities for students to locate books or journals of their choice.

Campus boarding is available and relatively inexpensive, but space is limited. Some students prefer to make private accommodation arrangements. Rental rates for private accommodation vary, but the general cost is still reasonable.

The Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine was the very first faculty of the university. It is also one of the most outstanding schools of medicine in the country. It has produced thousands of medical graduates who work in medical facilities in Indonesia and all over the world, as well as in the government and private sectors.
